Main activities of Samara Academic Consultancy Center:
 
1. Individual Consultations

Consultation is an individual meeting, where you and a tutor discuss a draft of your work through Q&A session. Come to us with the questions and we will work out the answers together.
Individual consultations are held in two stages - at first, our Russian-speaking tutor works with you on your text, after that we arrange an online consultation with a native speaker.

2. Professional Development Courses

  • The course “Becoming an Effective Researcher” is a unique project of Samara Academic Consultancy Center, Modern Languages and Professional Communication Department, Samara University. The purpose of this course is to increase publication activity of the scientific and pedagogical staff of the University, to provide help in writing articles indexed in international databases in English. Within this course, participants, under the guidance of both domestic and foreign experts in the field of scientific communication, will have an opportunity to try their hand in writing an article - step by step through the intricacies of writing an article in English. During the course, every two weeks one topic will be covered, dedicated to writing a separate part of the article. After the workshop two weeks are given for self- study and writing the part. At the end of the course participants will have a finished draft of an article, which they can publish in an international journal. Course duration - 1 academic year: once in 2 weeks; 28 weeks - 14 workshops.

3. Workshops

  • Workshop “Personal Letter”. This workshop reveals basic rules of a personal letter: the structure of a letter and phrases that can be useful while writing. At the end of the workshop students will learn how to write personal letters in English. This workshop will be ideal for first- and second- year bachelor students of all majors.   • Workshop “Business Letter”. The workshop introduces the basic rules and features concerning formal letter writing. This session covers not only vocabulary suitable for business communication, but also the most important grammar and stylistic aspects. As a result, students will learn how to write formal letters in English. This workshop suits first- and second-year bachelor students. Working language – English. Duration – 60 minutes.
  • Workshop “Create a Job-Winning CV. The workshop touches upon such useful aspects connected with the CV writing as features of a successful CV, its structure, cultural conventions, etc. During the workshop the participants will be able to practice in writing two most tricky CV sections: Education and Work Experience.   • Workshop “How to Make a Presentation”. The workshop is about basic rules of making a presentation in English and the way of its presenting in front of the audience. Attendees will get an idea of preparing presentation in English following the basic rules. Target audience - bachelors, Masters, post-graduates, researchers. Working language – English.   • Workshop “How to Make a Presentation” (Part II). The workshop is aimed to describe how to structure the presentation and how to put all the data you have in the most straightforward way. During the workshop you will find out how to describe the graphs, charts and other things in your presentation.  Working language – English. Duration – 60-90 minutes.   • Workshop “Proposal”. This workshop is aimed to explain why, how and for what we need to write a proposal, its structure and the parts a typical proposal has. Attendees will be able to prepare a proposal for a specific situation; they will know the structure of proposal writing. Perfect for Masters, post-graduates, researchers. Working language – English. Duration – 60 minutes.
  • Workshop “Thesis Statement”. The workshop is aimed at developing the ability to build logical and clearly stated thesis statements for all types of academic papers. Suitable for Master students, post-graduate students. Working language – English. Duration – 90 minutes.
  • Workshop “Essay”. The workshop covers the structure and а detailed description of a typical academic essay. Participants will learn what should be included in an introduction part, how to structure the body and how to conclude one’s essay successfully. Suitable for those who are interested in essay writing. Working language – English. Duration – 90 minutes.
  • Workshop “Abstract”. The workshop is about the rules of writing abstract for an academic paper in English. At the end of the workshop attendees will be able to write an abstract for an academic paper in English following specific structure and rules of writing abstracts in English. Masters, post-graduates, researchers will be interested in this session. Working language – English. Duration – 60-90 minutes.
  • Workshop “Paragraph Structure”. The workshop is aimed at developing the ability to create logically structured academic paragraphs. The practice-oriented session contributes to the development of basic academic writing skills through a successful combination of theory and practical writing exercises intended for mastering the skills of writing effective paragraphs for academic papers. Suitable for Master students, post-graduate students. Working language – English. Duration – 90 minutes.
  • Workshop “Are You Stylish? Wear APA”. The most popular APA style for scientific papers writing is the main issue of this workshop. Some aspects of manuscripts formatting and citation: bibliography and in-text referencing will be covered within the session. At the end of the workshop students will learn how to create bibliography and inside-the-text reference in APA style. This workshop is created for master students, postgraduate students and researchers. Working language – English. Duration – 60 minutes.
  • Workshop “Web of Science Secrets”. The workshop is intended to familiarize participants with the features of the Web of Science Core Collection database (features of search syntax, sorting of search results, refinement of search results, saving results). In addition, participants will get acquainted with a platform for creating a researcher's profile - ResearcherID, as well as with various online resources that will help in writing scientific texts. As a result, students will learn how to use the Web of Science Core Collection database, create an author's profile, and learn some additional online services.   • Workshop “Dealing with Bibliography”. The workshop covers the most crucial aspects of bibliography issues. Such useful resources as “EndNote” and “Cite While You Write” will show the participants that bibliography section is not a pain anymore! Suitable for both teaching staff and students of all levels.   • Workshop “Get to the Point: Avoid Wordiness”. The workshop is aimed at practicing basic strategies for overcoming the problem of wordiness. The practice-oriented session contributes to the development of basic academic writing skills through a successful combination of theory and practical writing exercises intended for mastering the most frequently used techniques of coping with wordy sentences.Target audience - Master students, post-graduate students.
